What are Engineering Plastics?
Engineering plastics, also known as advanced or performance plastics, are a category of polymers that have been specifically designed to offer enhanced mechanical and thermal properties. These plastics are used in various engineering industries where standard plastics may not meet the required performance criteria.
Engineering plastics are becoming increasingly essential in all industry sectors because engineered plastic components provide the only alternative for innovative technical applications in so many fields.
Common Types of Engineering Plastics
There are a wide range of materials that make up engineering plastics, each with specific properties and uses. Some common types include:
- Polycarbonate (PC) – Offers high impact resistance and dimensional stability. Polycarbonate is widely used in a huge number of products including safety helmets, automobile interiors and exteriors, glasses lenses, and medical equipment just to name a few.
- Polyamide (Nylon) – Available in various grades, nylon is known for its high strength, toughness, and excellent resistance to wear and tear. It’s used for things like gears, bearings, and automotive components.
- Polyoxymethylene (Acetal) – Known for its low friction and high stiffness, acetal is commonly used in plumbing fittings.
- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) – PET is widely used in beverage bottles, food containers, and various packing applications due to its strength and ability to make it clear.
- Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) – Commonly used in construction materials like cladding, pipes and electrical cable insulation, PVC has good chemical resistance.
